Valentine’s Day – To Propose or Not to Propose?

Valentine’s Day – To Propose or Not to Propose?

Valentine's Day is just around the corner and so love is in the air. It is estimated that around 10% of engaged couples in the US pop the question on Valentine's Day and thousands openly admit that they expect a proposal on February 14th. However, there are many women and men around the world who feel that a Valentine's Day proposal is a bit cliché. Before you go looking at diamond rings, take a look at our pros and cons for proposing on the day for lovers.

Why You Should Do It

As well as it being a generally romantic day, there are lots of practical reasons, such as giving you a memorable date and saving money on flowers and a nice meal out for just one occasion rather than two. According to a survey by jeweller H.Samuel, 6 out of 10 women think that getting engaged on Valentine's Day is just the ticket. The key is finding out whether your girlfriend falls into that 60%!

Of course, it doesn't just have to be the man that proposes. Although it was last year that was a leap year, a recent survey of British men and women revealed that 44% of men would be more than happy to receive a proposal from their girlfriend on Valentine's Day and would say yes, with 36% who would actually prefer for their partner to do it rather than them. However, ladies beware, the same survey by Pop Cap Games also revealed that 47% of men don't think that the man should be the one to buy the engagement rings if it's the woman that is proposing!

Why You Shouldn't Do It

Some women prefer to have a day to remember that's just about their engagement, and not shared with another holiday such as Christmas, their birthday or Valentine's Day. Valentine's Day isn't a day just for her or for the pair of you, but is a day shared with all lovers and so the romance of the occasion may be somewhat diluted.

Around 4 million Americans actually expect to be proposed to on Valentine's Day. With many men liking to make their proposal a surprise, choosing one of the most popular days of the year to do it perhaps isn't such a great idea!

The preferred locations for receiving a proposal are on holiday, in a special and memorable place, or even just at home, but wherever and whenever you decide to get down on bended knee, always make sure it is what is right for both of you rather than following a tradition that has become clichéd and predictable over the years.

Or, if you do think that Valentine's proposal will be something that she appreciates and hopes for, why not make it a bit more different and original by choosing to propose with one of our custom engagement rings that you have designed yourself? Just because it's a day when a lot of proposals will be made, it doesn't mean that yours has to blend into the background.
