Toasting The Happy Couple

Toasting The Happy Couple

When a couple gets engaged there will usually be a gathering of friends and family to toast the happy couple. It is a chance for everyone to get together and celebrate this exciting occasion and the bride-to-be can show off her new and shining engagement rings.

The tradition of the engagement toast stretches back many years and there is etiquette to follow with toasting, just as there is at weddings. After the lucky lady has shown off her engagement rings, there should be an order to the proceedings. Here is an overview of how the toasting should traditionally follow:

Parental toast

There was a time when this role was exclusively reserved for the father of the bride-to-be followed by the groom-to-be’s father. However, nowadays the mother and father of both sides can raise a toast.

Sibling toast

Next it is the turn of the brothers and sisters.

Grandparent toast

At this point the grandparents can toast although there are some who ask the grandparents to toast before the siblings.

Close relative toast

This is where close relatives such as cousins, special aunts and uncles can offer a toast after the immediate family.

Best Friends

At this stage best friends can toast. If the couple have already chosen the best man and the maid of honour they would start the proceedings but at this stage that is unusual.

Other friends

Now anyone else who wishes to toast the couple can say a few words.
